Public Works
The Public Works Department is dedicated to providing courteous and cost-effective core services to ensure that the City of Albemarle’s streets, sidewalks, and infrastructure are always kept clean, safe, and operational.
Administration
Our administrative office coordinates all departmental activities. We manage calls, requests, comments, and complaints, directing them to the proper division for resolution. We provide oversight of the City’s residential waste collection with our contractor, Waste Management.
Streets
Our Streets Division handles street and sidewalk repairs and maintenance, street sign installation and maintenance, storm drainage, street sweeping and vacuuming, beautification of our downtown areas, mowing of our public rights-of-way, street closures, snow and ice removal, and garbage & trash collection.
Residential Collection Services
We oversee collection and disposal of residential solid waste. These services are provided by our contractor, Waste Management and include weekly garbage and trash pickup, yard waste, seasonal leaf collection, and white goods pick up.
Solid Waste Facility
The City of Albemarle Solid Waste and Recycling Facility is located at 40592 Stony Gap Road in Albemarle, NC. This 540+ acre facility operates a Subtitle D Landfill and a Construction & Demolition Landfill. Additionally, we provide programs for the disposal and recycling of appliances, scrap tires, electronics and a variety of other items.
Fleet Maintenance
The City Garage maintains and repairs a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including police and fire vehicles, street equipment, water, sewer and electric trucks, and solid waste disposal and compaction equipment.
Warehouse
The City Warehouse serves as the central storage facility for over $3 million dollars of inventory. We receive, inventory, and issue supplies for the City’s electric, water and sewer distribution services. Additionally, we maintain the City’s fuel dispensing operations located at the Operations Center, including the FuelMaster management system.
