The City of Albemarle contracts Waste Management to provide solid-waste collection for residents. For issues with garbage, recycling, or yard waste, please call 704-984-9400 (press 3)


Disposal Guidelines

Help keep Albemarle beautiful. Consult the following guidelines for the disposal of your solid waste, yard waste, and household appliances help keep down the cost of these services and to ensure the City’s neighborhoods are kept clean and attractive.

Residential Garbage

  • DO NOT place carts at curb earlier than 6 p.m. on day before collection
  • Remove carts from curb by 7 p.m. on collection day
  • All garbage in carts should be bagged
  • NEVER place household garbage loose at curb
  • Excess garbage should be bagged & placed next to cart & NOT on top
  • Place cart with top handle facing home Please space carts at least three feet apart
  • Do NOT place dirt, rocks, building materials, liquids, or animal waste in carts
  • Carts should NOT be removed from the residence for any reason
  • Carts damaged from normal wear & tear will be replaced at no expense.
  • Carts damaged from misuse must be replaced at owner’s expense

Other Residential Waste

  • Bulky waste items too large for a cart are collected once a week on the same day as garbage collection
  • Do NOT place items at the curb before 6 p.m. the day prior to collection
  • Residents are allowed four (4) cubic yards of bulky household waste per week. Waste exceeding the limit should be held until the following week

Construction & Demolition Waste

  • Residents may place furniture, mattresses, cabinets, carpeting, decking, grills, etc. at the curb for weekly collection. NOTE: Items should be placed in a pile separate from bulky waste & not exceed

    a total of four (4) cubic yards

Recycling

  • Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as garbage
  • Blue carts are for recycling only

Yard Waste

  • Yard waste is collected once a week on the same day as garbage
  • Residents are allowed up to four (4) cubic yards per week
  • Place yard waste at the curb or roadside between 6 p.m. the day prior to collection & 6 a.m. the day of collection
  • Tree limbs should be stacked neatly & placed parallel to the street
  • Tree limbs should be cut in portions of six (6) feet or less in length
  • Keep yard waste piles at least three (3) feet from objects such as fences, mailboxes, utility poles, garbage & recycling carts, fire hydrants, vehicles, etc.
  • Bagged yard waste should be placed at the curb or roadside
  • Bags must be sturdy enough not to break when lifted for disposal
  • DO NOT mix yard waste with building materials, household trash, metals, rocks, dirt, plastics, etc.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Items weighing more than 250 lbs. such as stumps & tree trunks will not be collected

Note: Hired tree-service and landscaping contractors must remove all waste they produce. Make sure contractors include removal in their service.

Leaf Collection

  • Loose leaf collection occurs October - March. View the collection schedule at www.albemarlenc.gov/leafpickup
  • DO NOT place loose leaves at the curb or roadside before October or after March
  • Bagged leaves are collected year around if placed in bags weighing no more than 50 lbs.
  • Leaves must be at the curb or roadside by 7 a.m. on scheduled collection day
  • DO NOT mix leaves with ANY other types of waste, including trash, bricks, rocks, sticks, or other yard waste.

Appliances & Electronics

  • Appliances & Electronics are collected same day as garbage
  • Items should NOT be placed out for collection more than one (1) day in advance

Commercial, Industrial, & Institutional Waste 

  • Collection of small business, commercial, industrial, & institutional generated waste and recycling are NOT part of the City’s residential services
  • Collection of the waste must be arranged separately & can be removed by one of several commercial haulers

Non-collectable Items

 

Non-collectable items placed out for collection will be tagged by Waste Management. They will be required to be collected and removed at the property owner’s expense.

These items include: Tires, batteries, paint, pesticides, hazardous or infectious waste, liquid or closed containers.


Violations

Violation of specified rules and procedures will result in the property owner being contacted by the City to correct the situation. Continued compliance failure will result in a fine of up to $100.00 per day.


Holidays

 

On the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, 4th of July, & Labor Day, services normally performed will have a one day delay for the remainder of the week following the holiday.
