The City of Albemarle owns, operates, and maintains two water treatment plants and one wastewater treatment plant.
The Highway 52 Water Treatment Plant
The Highway 52 Water Treatment Plant is located at the intersection of Highway 52 and Bethany Road. Construction began on this facility in the late 1940’s. In the early 1960’s, the facility was expanded from four to eight filters. In the early 1970’s, the front concrete-clear well was added. In 2016 the facility underwent a complte renovation.
This facility can produce up to 12 million gallons per day of potable water. There is a raw water reservoir located at the facility, which can store approximately 25 million gallons for treatment. A pump station located at the end of Pumphouse Road pumps the raw water from Narrows Reservoir (Badin Lake).
The facility has three potable water storage water concrete-clear wells with a total volume of 4.5 million gallons. There is an elevated tank located at the facility, which can hold 200 thousand gallons. There are six pumps of various sizes, which pump potable water into the distribution system.
Jack F. Neel Water Treatment Plant
The Jack F. Neel Water Treatment Plant is located near the bridge on Highway 49, which crosses the Tuckertown Reservoir. It was completed in 1992. This treatment plant can produce up to 6.5 million gallons per day of potable water.
The facility includes a raw-water reservoir capable of storing approximately 35 million gallons for treatment. A pump station located at the site pumps the raw water from the Tuckertown Reservoir.
A potable water ground storage tank with a 4 million gallon capacity is located on site. Thanks to its site elevation all the water produced by the Jack F. Neel Water Treatment Plant flows to Albemarle by gravity, requiring no pumping.
Long Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility
The Long Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility is located on Coble Avenue.Wastewater from the collection system ultimately is transported to the Long Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility for treatment before being discharged into Long Creek.
The facility has a rated capacity to treat up to 12 million gallons per day. The facility is based on an extended aeration aerobic sludge process with tertiary filtration to augment the treatment process.
