Q&A with Lindsey Almond

What makes you passionate about your career field?

"I am most passionate about creating jobs, building and diversifying a community’s business landscape, and increasing the economic mobility of families. In this role, every day is a challenge to move the needle. I was very impressed when talking with the City of Albemarle, that their strategies in economic and community development mirror mine. If we want to see growth, we have to all work collectively to create an environment where businesses can grow, where people feel they can advance in their career, and where they can feel opportunity – regardless of their background or circumstance. This work has the capability to change the entire trajectory of a family, allowing them the opportunity to plan for a life they didn’t even know was within their reach, and it’s what makes this work worthwhile."

What career accomplishments are you most proud of?

Lindsey Almond"I have a diverse set of skills that I have built out of necessity with our military moves. In my career I have worked in a regional capacity, state-wide capacity, and locally in workforce and economic development. In North Carolina, I have directed workforce training programs from as far west as Rutherford County out to Carteret County. From 2020 to 2022, in the middle of the COVID pandemic, we never stopped working to advance the skills of North Carolinians. During this extremely difficult time, we helped keep companies open and people at work. Across the state, my teams put 396 individuals to work in on-the-job training programs, supported 1,255 people in building their occupational skills, and assisted nearly 2,200 businesses with retaining and building their workforce. People and businesses build communities, and helping others flourish is what drives me daily."

What drew you to Albemarle?

"The sense of community and belonging that I feel here. Albemarle is my hometown. I started at Little Red School House and graduated from Albemarle High School. Growing up, I was always very active at First Lutheran Church and enjoyed serving the community and others. I started my career in economic development working for the Stanly County EDC. Once married my husband, Chris Almond, US Navy Chief Retired and a graduate of North Stanly High School, his career took us elsewhere. I have been blessed with the opportunity to continue my career in economic and workforce development at his different duty stations – living both in Hawaii and Maryland. Since his retirement in 2018, we knew “going home” was our ultimate goal, and I hoped I would always have the opportunity to serve my community again. I have been so impressed with the renovations and developments we saw every time we came home to visit family, and I cannot wait to continue building the positive momentum!"

In working for the City of Albemarle, what are you most looking forward to?

"Over this past decade, I have been so impressed with the continuous improvements I have seen in Albemarle, but especially in the Downtown area. From the beautification projects, to the breweries and restaurants, the redevelopments of buildings, and the new boutiques and small businesses that have opened, I am really excited about continuing these types of projects. I am also really looking forward to helping the companies that have chosen Albemarle, to expand their operations. Finally, and possibly most importantly, I am looking forward to the opportunity that the Albemarle Business Park presents the community. The City has worked diligently to create an atmosphere where businesses and industry can thrive. The strategic plan Albemarle City Council adopted in 2022 is providing the direction and goals necessary for City Staff to turn vision into reality. I am thrilled to join a team that is working collaboratively towards a common goal."
